The questionnaire assesses perceived burdensomeness (PB; 6 items) and thwarted belongingness (9 items). The current sample showed an average PB score of 10.9 ± 7.3 (mean ± SD), suggesting a relatively higher degree of loneliness compared with healthy adults as reported in previous work (Vanyukov et al., 2017; Chu et al., 2018). The 12 items were rated on a 7-point scale ranging from 1 (very strongly disagree) to 7 (very strongly agree), with higher scores indicating greater perceived support. - Providing young adults with personalized feedback about their alcohol use compared to their peers has shown effectiveness.

But my inner pessimist sees alcohol use continuing in its pandemic vein, more about coping than conviviality. Not all social drinking is good, of course; maybe some of it should wane, too (for example, some employers have recently banned alcohol from work events because of concerns about its role in unwanted sexual advances and worse). And yet, if we use alcohol more and more as a private drug, we’ll enjoy fewer of its social benefits, and get a bigger helping of its harms.
Why Do People Drink Socially?
And this came on top of early Americans’ other favorite drink, homemade cider. Many people, including children, drank cider at every meal; a family could easily go through a barrel a week. In short, Americans of the early 1800s were rarely in a state that could be described as sober, and a lot of the time, they were drinking to get drunk. A 2022 study suggests that alcohol can amplify emotional experiences in social contexts, potentially enhancing the quality of social interactions and contributing to a sense of well-being. Additionally, moderate alcohol intake is linked to low health risks for many individuals and may be related to the presence of beneficial compounds like flavonoids found in wine. Social drinking often occurs in environments where alcohol is a central element of group interactions, and individuals may partake in drinking to feel included or to conform to group norms.
Using this comparison, Mezey reminds us that human society is made up of interdependent individuals, groups, institutions, and systems, similar to the living ecosystem of the forest. A social problem, then, is one that involves a wider scope of groups, institutions, nations, or global populations. If you don’t consider the historical perspective, you may be led to believe that these things are no longer problems. However, you’d be ignoring the fact that we already have a very robust system in place to try to keep those issues as low as possible.

As we cross the globe on our feet, bikes, camels, trains, cars, and airplanes, our diseases travel with us. In addition to social interdependence, we experience economic interdependence.
This mutation occurred around the time that a major climate disruption transformed the landscape of eastern Africa, eventually leading to widespread extinction. In the intervening scramble for food, the leading theory goes, our predecessors resorted to eating fermented fruit off the rain-forest floor. Those animals that liked the smell and taste of alcohol, and were good at metabolizing it, were rewarded with calories. In the evolutionary hunger games, the drunk apes beat the sober ones. On top of the healthcare cost of alcohol-related intentional violence in the United States, the estimated annual cost to the criminal justice system is another $25 billion. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), excessive alcohol use costs the U.S. almost a quarter trillion dollars a year.
A sudden change in life, such as a divorce, death, or job loss, can lead to excessive stress. Some people turn to alcohol as a way to cope with major life changes. If problem drinking was an issue in your home as you were growing up, you are at greater risk of developing a problem with alcohol.
If we look for larger social patterns, however, we see that as of 2021 about 1 in 8 Americans have student loan debt, owing about 1.6 trillion dollars (Federal Reserve Bank of New York 2021). The volume of this debt and the harm that is being caused stretch far beyond the experience of a few individuals. I believe ongoing use of community water fluoridation is safe because it’s at a low enough level that we know that it’s advantageous to be drinking it based on the research that we have. Around the 1930s, researchers were looking at why there were some individuals in certain parts of our country that didn’t have as much dental decay, and who also had some mottling or staining to their teeth.
